Another T(ri)ango trip to Slovakia / Ďalší T(ri)ango výlet na Slovensko

It's always good to play with these guys. It's been 10 years now since our first appearance and in the meantime we played quite a few concerts, from New York to Humenne (Look it up). And it's getting better. We never thought in the first 8 years, that our little Tango trio would ever incorporate a player of Slovak folk instruments. I don't think anyone could've imagined that, but it happened. 

Klub, synagóga, stanica

Pred asi 42 rokmi som zažil svoj prvý aktívny kontakt so symfonickým orchestrom. Už dlho predtým ma jeho zvuk a štruktúra fascinovali a veľmi som chcel byť jeho súčasťou. Klavirista nemal v orchestri čo robiť, tak som si zvolil najjednoduchšiu prístupovú cestu - bicie nástroje.

SOOFSER #3 IN BOHEMIAN NATIONAL HALL, NYC

Czech Center New York presents "Sounds of Serendipity," a casual and intimate concert series curated by the Slovak-American composer/conductor Peter Breiner. The free concerts, known as Soofser for short (Sounds of Serendipity), feature new and emerging composers and performers with a strong connection to musical tradition and Czech musical culture.

Sounds of Serendipity's origin as a series of house concerts is reflected in the casual atmosphere and intimate seating format. Audience members may even enjoy refreshments during the concert.

Moje skladby sa hrajú naživo pomerne často, momentálne napríklad v Taliansku, Hong Kongu, Grécku a Slovinsku. Občas ma dokonca pozvú, aby som ich hral alebo dirigoval. Alebo, ako to bude o asi 10 dní, aj jedno, aj druhé. Nestáva sa to často a je to celkom veľká udalosť pre skladateľa - budem mať za jeden večer hneď tri premiéry. Budem ich všetky dirigovať a v jednej z nich budem hrať aj klavírne sólo.

Vlado Godar, whom I mentioned in previous postings, is also a "behind the scenes" magician. He puts  things, events and people together quite often. The results are mostly excellent. Years ago he persuaded me to get together and play with a young violin player, because he was sure we'd hit it off.

Once again he was right and the result was great. Stano Paluch is an extremely talented musician and since our first meeting we worked together many times, created a Tango group, played many concerts in Europe and USA, made recordings and had a lot of fun.

In July 2013 we played at the Mazal Tov festival in Kosice, Slovakia. On of the pieces was a 17 minute Gershwin pastiche that I arranged, in which Stanko played and improvised with a little help of a string orchestra Musica Cassovia. This is a live video from the event. As Mazal Tov was a Jewish Culture Festival, the Gershiwn pastiche swerves a bit towards Klezmer at the end. Stanko, of course, handles that with a bravura as well. Enjoy. More music below.
